A2 speaking exam examples
What a good A2 answer usually does
A strong A2 answer does not sound advanced. It answers the task, gives the most important detail, and uses simple Dutch that another person can understand. If the question asks why, give one reason. If the task shows pictures, name what you see and say what happens.
Answer style
- Use simple complete sentences.
- Give a reason when the question asks why.
- Correct yourself and continue if you make a mistake.
- Speak clearly at a normal speed.
- Do not answer with only one word unless the task clearly allows it.
Useful speaking sentence patterns
| Task | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Make an appointment | Ik wil graag een afspraak maken voor ... | Ik wil graag een afspraak maken voor maandag. |
| Explain a problem | Ik kan niet komen, want ... | Ik kan vandaag niet komen, want mijn kind is ziek. |
| Ask for help | Kunt u mij helpen met ...? | Kunt u mij helpen met dit formulier? |
| Give an opinion | Ik vind ... goed, omdat ... | Ik vind dit goed, omdat het makkelijk is. |
| Describe one picture | Ik zie ... . Hij/Zij is ... | Ik zie een vrouw. Zij is aan het bellen. |
| Choose between two pictures | Ik kies foto ..., want ... | Ik kies foto twee, want de trein is sneller. |
| Describe three pictures | Eerst ... Daarna ... Tot slot ... | Eerst kookt hij. Daarna eet hij. Tot slot wast hij af. |
Model answers for common A2 speaking situations

| You want to make a doctor's appointment. | Ik wil graag een afspraak maken bij de huisarts. Kan dat morgen om tien uur? | It says what you want and suggests a clear time. |

Picture-question templates
| Question type | What to say | Safe A2 template |
|---|---|---|
| One picture | Name the person, place, action, and one detail. | Ik zie een ... . Hij/Zij is ... . Het is in/op/bij ... . |
| Two pictures | Choose one picture and explain why. | Ik kies foto ... . Dat is beter, want ... . |
| Three pictures | Tell the order of the story. | Eerst ... . Daarna ... . Tot slot ... . |
| Problem situation | Say the problem and what you want. | Ik heb een probleem. ... . Kunt u mij helpen? |
If you do not know the word in the picture
Do not freeze. Use a simple description instead of the exact noun. If you do not know the word for one object, say the color, size, place, action, or what the person does with it. For example: Het is een geel ding. Je gebruikt het in de keuken. The goal is to keep speaking and show that another person can understand your message.
Common mistakes in A2 speaking practice
- Memorizing long answers that do not match the question.
- Describing every small object in a picture but forgetting the main action.
- Giving only a noun, for example fiets, instead of a short sentence.
- Forgetting to make a clear choice when the task asks you to choose.
- Stopping after one mistake instead of correcting yourself and continuing.
- Speaking too quietly or too fast because you are rushing.
Quick answers to common worries
| Question | Short answer | What to practise |
|---|---|---|
| Do grammar mistakes fail me? | Small mistakes are normal at A2. The answer still needs to be understandable and complete. | Use short sentences you can say correctly. |
| How long should my answer be? | Usually a few clear sentences are better than a long answer with many mistakes. | Answer the task, add one detail, and stop. |
| Can I correct myself? | Yes. A short correction is better than stopping. | Say: Sorry, ik bedoel ... and continue. |
| Do I need perfect pronunciation? | No. Aim for clear pronunciation, normal speed, and understandable words. | Record yourself and check if the main message is clear. |
10-minute practice routine
- Pick one situation: appointment, problem, choice, one picture, or three pictures.
- Write only three key words, not a full script.
- Record a 30-60 second answer.
- Listen once and check: did I answer the task, give a reason, and speak clearly?
- Record the same answer again with one improvement.
Scoring and result
The official A2 result comes from DUO. Dutch Exams can help you practice task completion, clarity, fluency, and answer completeness, but it cannot replace the official assessment.
Record and review
After practice, listen to your own answer once. Check whether you answered the question, gave a reason when needed, and spoke clearly enough. Do not rewrite the whole answer; improve one habit at a time.
