Education in the Netherlands is compulsory (leerplicht) from age 5 until at least age 16, with partial obligation until 18. After primary school (basisschool), students take a CITO test that helps determine which secondary school track they follow: VMBO, HAVO, or VWO.

Study note

The Dutch education system may seem strict with its early 'tracking', but students can move between levels. Parent involvement is expected - attend school meetings and parent evenings (ouderavonden)!
