The Dutch healthcare system centers on the huisarts (GP/family doctor), who is the 'gatekeeper'. You register with a huisarts near your home, and they refer you to specialists when needed. Basic health insurance (zorgverzekering) is mandatory for people who live or work in the Netherlands.
| Dutch | English | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Huisarts | GP/Family doctor | First point of contact |
| Apotheek | Pharmacy | Dispenses medications |
| Ziekenhuis | Hospital | Specialist/emergency care |
| Zorgverzekering | Health insurance | Mandatory if you live or work in the Netherlands |
Examples
- Je bent ziek. Naar wie ga je?
- You are sick. Who do you go to?
- Je gaat eerst naar de huisarts.
- You first go to the GP.
- Een zorgverzekering is verplicht.
- Health insurance is mandatory.
Study note
Dutch doctors are known for their 'wait and see' approach - they don't prescribe medication easily. Don't be surprised if your huisarts recommends paracetamol and rest! This is normal Dutch medical culture.
