Punctuality is extremely important in Dutch culture. Being on time shows respect. For official appointments, arrive 5 minutes early. For social visits, arrive exactly on time or a few minutes after - but never early! Plans are often made weeks in advance.
| Type | Timing | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Doctor/Official | 5 min early | Shows respect |
| Work meeting | On time exactly | Being late is unprofessional |
| Social visit | On time or 5 min late | Never early! |
| Dinner party | Exactly on time | Food is timed |
Examples
- Je hebt een afspraak om 10:00.
- You have an appointment at 10:00.
- Je bent er om 9:55.
- You arrive at 9:55.
- Te laat komen is onbeleefd.
- Being late is impolite.
Study note
Dutch people plan their social calendars far ahead. Don't be surprised if a friend says 'I can see you in 3 weeks' - agendas are taken seriously! Spontaneous visits are uncommon; always call or message first.
