Good relations with neighbors are valued in the Netherlands. It's polite to greet neighbors when you see them, introduce yourself when you move to a new home, and be considerate about noise. Many Dutch neighborhoods have 'burendag' (neighbor's day) events.
| Dutch | English | When to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Hallo | Hello | Casual greeting |
| Goedemorgen | Good morning | Before noon |
| Goedemiddag | Good afternoon | Noon to 6 PM |
| Goedenavond | Good evening | After 6 PM |
Examples
- Je ziet de buurman op straat.
- You see the neighbor on the street.
- Je zegt 'hallo' of knikt.
- You say 'hello' or nod.
- Ik woon hier nieuw.
- I'm new here./I just moved here.
Study note
When moving to a new home, it's customary to introduce yourself to immediate neighbors in the first week. You might receive a small welcome card or plant in return. Noise after 10 PM is frowned upon.
