The Netherlands recognizes different forms of partnerships: marriage (huwelijk), registered partnership (geregistreerd partnerschap), and cohabitation contracts (samenlevingscontract). Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2001. Divorce (echtscheiding) requires legal procedures through the court.
