Your gemeente (municipality) provides many essential services: issuing ID documents, birth registration, marriage, residency registration (BRP), waste collection, and local permits. The gemeentehuis (town hall) or Burgerzaken is where you go for official documents.

Study note
Always make an appointment (afspraak) before visiting the gemeente - walk-ins often face long waits or may be turned away. Most municipalities have online appointment systems. Bring required documents (ID, proof of address) and payment (pin or debit card usually; cash often not accepted).
